About the Position


Zymeworks is seeking an Associate Scientist in the Technology Integration & Bioinformatics group who will be responsible for the development and application of Cryo-EM tools that will advance our in-house technology platforms for antibody engineering, discovery and therapeutic development. Working in the Technology group, this position will collaborate closely with protein engineering, antibody discovery, modeling, simulation and translational informatics team members to advance novel and innovative techniques and solutions to glean structural and mechanistic insights aiding rational biologics design. This position will also be actively engaged with our collaborators working towards refining and pushing the boundaries of these techniques with a cross-functional perspective.


This position will report to the Lead, Technology Integration & Bioinformatics group and will be based in Vancouver, BC.


Key Responsibilities


  • Develops and implements structural biology analysis tools, with a focus on Cryo-EM, tomography and advanced microscopy imaging techniques, for applications in protein engineering and antibody discovery towards biologics drug optimization and research.
  • In collaboration with molecular simulation, structural biology and therapeutics development teams, develops novel techniques for integrating experimental structural data in modeling therapeutic protein dynamics and structure-function analysis.
  • Manages and works across the structural biology tool pipeline. Works with other scientific research teams to gather requirements, specification, plan development, implement, validate and support application of novel experimental structural biology analysis tools.
  • Works with collaborators (academic and CRO’s) to develop, plan and execute on custom tool development efforts for structural biology data collection, processing and analysis.
  • Develops and implements robust data management, analysis techniques for the interpretation of experimental and in silico structural biology data. Participates in the analysis, visualization and communication of output.
  • Participates in the development of rigorous documentation and standard operating procedures.
  • Fosters effective and collaborative working relationships with fellow employees, management and external partners.


Qualifications and Education


  • Requires a PhD in structural biology, computer science or related field with cross functional experience in macromolecular structure refinement methods and tool development.
  • Hands on experience with Cryo-EM software (RELION, cryoSPARC) and advanced high-resolution microscopy data processing.
  • Experience with large scale scientific data analysis and the application of technologies to improve data processing and quality (including AI and ML techniques).
  • Experience with computational image processing from any of the advanced microscopy techniques including cryo-EM micrographs, high resolution confocal, TIRF, SMLM image analysis.
  • Proficient in Python, R or any other programming language
  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of cross-functional team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in spoken and written English
