About the Position

This position will report to an Associate Scientist, Oncology and be based in Vancouver, BC.

Zymeworks is seeking a Research Associate II to join the Oncology team. This position will focus on the design, execution, and analysis of in vitro bioassays to identify oncology therapeutic candidates and evaluate their mechanisms of action, with an emphasis on antibody drug conjugates and their immunomodulatory effects. This highly motivated multidisciplinary team is responsible for driving pipeline program advancement and creating best-in-class therapeutics.

Qualified candidates will have a background in cell biology, oncology, immunology, or a related discipline with the ability to independently design, execute and interpret experiments. The ideal candidate would have industry drug development experience and be highly proficient in multiple analysis modalities, including a variety of in vitro cell-based assays, multi-color flow cytometry, ELISA, high-content imaging, electrochemiluminescence (MSD) and primary cell isolation, culture and stimulation. Excellent communication skills, organization skills and enthusiasm for teamwork are essential. 

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Designs and develops novel assays for thorough interrogation of biological systems to evaluate molecular mechanisms of action and mechanisms of resistance.
  • Utilizes innovative approaches to design assays that delve deep into understanding the underlying mechanisms of cancer biology and therapeutic response.
  • Performs a variety of established cell-based in vitro assays for functional characterization of bioconjugates and/or small molecules.
  • Designs, optimizes, executes, analyzes, and documents robust sets of experiments.
  • Regularly performs mammalian tissue culture, including the maintenance of multiple tumor cell lines using sterile technique, as well as the expansion, cryopreservation and thawing of cell lines as needed.
  • Maintains high levels of productivity, organization, and teamwork in the laboratory including the use of inventory management systems. 

Education and Experience

  • MSc in a scientific discipline in biological sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Highly proficient using wet lab instrumentation: flow cytometer, plate reader/stacker, plate washer/stacker, automated liquid handling robot, automated cell counter, multimode reagent dispenser, and high content imaging instruments.
  • Proficiency in tissue culture of immortalized lines as well as primary human and mouse innate and adaptive immune cells.
  • Experience with three‐dimensional (3D) in vitro cancer models 
  • Highly skilled in data analysis and graphing/results presentation (GraphPad Prism or similar).
  • Works effectively in a high paced, multi-tasking, fast changing environment.
  • Comfortable handling large sample numbers in 96 or 384 well format.
